Description
An account of the resource
My senior project took a focus on early music to modern day music. This project exemplified the special characteristics of famous composers from each specific era. It demonstrated the technicalities that made each composer unique in various ways. It was concluded that no matter how many times you may learn a piece of music, there is always something new to learn or different to add to each composition to make it special in your own way.

Description
An account of the resource
Ultrafast electron microscopy is an emerging field of interest that utilizes pulses of electrons as a tool to probe specimens, particularly to enable the study of ultrafast dynamics. We will use optical techniques to try and compress electron pulses to generate an improved temporal resolution. This will enable faster dynamics to be at the center of attention for future research. The work presented in this undergraduate thesis is a contribution to this optical technique and involves the design and operation of a pulsed electron source.

An account of the resource
Using oral histories collected by historians, as well as a diary, a memoir, letters, and secondary sources, I analyzed Palestinian women’s perspectives on British policies, people, and values during the British Mandate (1922-1948). While most Palestinian women generally disapproved of the overall policy decisions of the Mandatory Government, deeming them as pro-Zionist, opinions on British attempts to modernize Palestine, as well as British people and culture, were more varied. Women educated in missionary schools and urban middle- to upper-class women were more likely to equate the British with progress and adopt Western ideals of civilization, while rural and lower- to middle- class women expressed more ambivalence about Westernization and sometimes resisted Britain’s modernization efforts.

Description
An account of the resource
Prudentius, according to the Oxford Classical Dictionary, is the greatest of the Christian Latin poets, on the other hand Malamud in 1989 calls him the last classical poet along with his contemporary Claudian. Born around 350 and living past 405, Prudentius, in summary seeks to synthesize themes and content from both pagan and Christian literature during a time of great change and transition in an attempt to legitimize the authority of the officially Christianized government and promote Christian morality. There is a huge amount of previously unstudied Late Antique primary source material, and this combined Brown’s rediscovery of the period in the English speaker’s mind, if for no other reason than it being a useful designation, has pushed it to the front. Prudentius, in particular, has remained unseen by English speakers, leading me to the project today. I will proceed to argue that Prudentius, a poet on the end of Classical work and facing changing cultural and religious winds of Christianity, attempts to impose Christian morality onto pagan or traditional literary themes and topics.

Taxing the Wealth of Nations by Ethan Freiermuth
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
According to Adam Smith, whose insights still underpin economics as a discipline to this day, taxation is justified by the government’s ability to fulfill needs which cannot be supplied by the market and otherwise intervening to create efficiency and efficacy. While Smith’s recommendations and policy analyses were limited by his economic model and by the economic and technological development of his time, his principles are still very much applicable to the modern day. It is abundantly clear that Smith argues the vast majority of the market should be left alone to the natural incentives of the private sphere, however he does still envision a role for government which creates and enhances economic inefficiency, and provides still relevant guidelines for avoiding ill-advised policies which imprudently tax the wealth of nations.

Description
An account of the resource

An account of the resource
This paper uses generic criticism to analyze President John F. Kennedy's Address to the Nation on the Cuban Missile Crisis and its ability to communicate two messages to different audiences simultaneously. Using the genre of Presidential War Rhetoric as explained by Karlyn Kohrs Campbell and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, this paper finds that Kennedy uses content to develop a message of stability and peace to the United States, while using the form of Presidential War Rhetoric to develop a message of potential aggression by the U.S. to counter Soviet Union involvement in Cuba.

An account of the resource
This paper uses gender criticism to analyze Jerramy Fine’s book, In Defense of the Princess: How Plastic Tiaras and Fairytale Dreams Can Inspire Smart, Strong Women. Fine uses examples of princesses to convey the differences between the two genders. This paper uses the characteristics of the second and third waves of feminism as guidelines for analysis and finds that Fine’s book argues that second wave feminist beliefs can be counterproductive.

Comparison of Usury/Interest and Asymmetric Information by Jacob Diny
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
The paper compares Adam Smith’s philosophy of Usury to the modern theory of usury and critiques the theory Adam Smith presents. After the comparison, there is discussion about how Adam Smith wanted to regulate usury or interest rates. I then present how asymmetric information played a role the 2008 financial crisis and give a brief overview on some of the causes of the “Great Recession” based on published literature. I then take Adam Smith’s theory on usury and describe how Adam Smith would have reacted to the 2008 crisis and the causes leading up to it. Adam Smith would have argued against the deregulation because Smith believed in only lending to the “sober people”, people who have proven themselves in business already.

Direct interactions between Escherichia coli transcription proteins Rho and NusA by Taryn Bosquez
Subject
The topic of the resource
Biology
Description
An account of the resource
Transcription termination is an important regulatory component within the Escherichia coli (E. coli) genome. Two proteins are known to influence transcriptional termination in E. coli: Rho and NusA. Rho only functions to induce transcription termination, while NusA is involved in both the enhancement and inhibition of termination. This study aimed to determine whether the two proteins influence each other's functions through direct or indirect interactions. Reciprocal yeast two hybrid (Y2H) analysis using vectors expressing Rho and NusA as fusion with the protein domain of the Gal4 transcriptional factor indicated direct interactions between the two proteins. These results will allow us to further study the mechanistic roles of each protein in transcription termination, as well as the process of gene expression throughout the E.coli genome.

Description
An account of the resource
The world of comics has many black superheroes who mostly added as a sidekick for the main hero such as Falcon to Captain America, Storm to Cyclops from X-Men, and even Miles Morales to Spider-Man. While Falcon became the first mainstream black superhero when introduced in 1969 as Captain America’s second hand man. Storm was introduced in 1975 and became one of the first black members of the X-Men only to be a sidekick to the group as the main trio of the team was highlighted in the comics. Then comes Miles Morales in 2006 as the first black character to take the Spider-man mantle after the death of Peter Parker (Ultimate universe). Miles has a history of being put in the sidekick position during crossover events where he goes into a different dimension to help Peter with a end of the world crisis.
Films have given the spotlight to black superheroes who can hold their own in the box office as their Anglo counterparts and have helped bring more popularity. We have seen “Black Panther” break records for the month of February in 2018 as an all black cast brought the world of Wakanda and the struggles T’Challa faced as he took the role of King of Wakanda. Fast forward a few months later to December of 2018 and we get the animated feature of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” where we see Miles Morales become the Spider-Man of his universe. The films each deal with a specific struggle that affects African American society while telling the story of African American superheroes.

Inequalities in Food Access in Milwaukee County, WI by Rebecca Rate and Dr. Soren Hauge
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
Debate continues over “food deserts”, or disparities in food access, which disproportionately affect low-income and minority communities. This study adds to the quantitative empirical analysis of these disparities, informed by economic theory. Data for neighborhoods of Milwaukee County in 2016 are used to test whether, controlling for other economic factors, there remains a statistically and economically significant difference in access to various types of food retailers among neighborhoods of different racial compositions. The process is modelled on an empirical analysis done in Erie County, New York in 2008, with some modifications. Travel times from retailers to neighborhoods (census block groups) measured in a geographic information system provide counts of retailers accessible to each neighborhood. These are used for estimation of inter-neighborhood inequalities with Gini coefficients and incidence rate ratios with Poisson, negative binomial, zero-inflated Poisson and semi-parametric Poisson regressions. The findings show that there are far fewer large supermarkets accessible to neighborhoods that are predominantly black, compared to those that are predominantly white. By contrast, there are a greater number of smaller grocery stores, by all travel modes -- driving, walking and bicycling. Results are mixed for convenience and variety stores, but the statistically significant results show more convenience and variety stores in neighborhoods that are predominantly black. If further research confirms higher costs and lesser variety of healthy foods at smaller grocery stores, convenience and variety stores, these results will have troubling implications for public health in the context of a metropolitan area with high levels of racial segregation.

Selective Attention and Feedback Performance: Does Feedback Actually Help? by Rebecca E. Leuenberger
Subject
The topic of the resource
Psychology
Description
An account of the resource
This study mainly focused on the load theory of selective attention proposed by Lavie, Hirst, and de Frockert (2004), which identified that high perceptual loads and high cognitive loads yield higher detections of irrelevant stimuli in selective attention tasks. A directional flanker task was used to study changing cognitive loads while maintaining two fixed levels of perceptual load. Two experiments were completed in this study; Experiment 1 revealed significance in the effects of the flanker task, specifically the congruent and neutral trials exhibiting significantly faster reaction times than the incongruent trials. Experiment 2 revealed significance in the effects of the flanker task and changing cognitive loads, demonstrated by feedback. Based on these findings, this study concluded that both perceptual load and cognitive load influence reaction times.

Energy density of two forage species in the northwestern Atlantic: Silver Hake (Merluccius bilinearis) and Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) by Katherine King
Subject
The topic of the resource
Biology
Description
An account of the resource
Understanding forage species’ energy density is important for mapping energy flow in an ecosystem. Bioenergetic models are used to determine which species play important roles and how changes may influence the ecosystem in which they reside. In the Northwest Atlantic ecosystem, energy flow is largely controlled by forage species. The current study aims to 1) compare two forage species’ energy content and 2) find a size measurement which can be used to predict energy content. Using a Soxhlet apparatus and muffle furnace, the lipid and protein values of two forage species, Alewife and Silver Hake, were collected. Alewife are 3-4 times as lipid rich as Silver Hake, depending on the size measurement. Dry weight measurements can be used to predict energy in Alewife, however, Silver Hake did not have a size measurement which could be used to confidently predict energy content. Why species vary in which measurements can be used to predict energy and how to effectively use the energy data that can be collected is a direction for future research.

Romanticizing Piracy During its Golden Age, 1650-1730 by Eric Fels
Subject
The topic of the resource
History
Description
An account of the resource
Modern portrayals of the 17th and 18th century piracy are largely romanticized and sensationalized, with pirates themselves often depicted as the protagonists. This paper explores the origins of this romantic view of the Golden Age of Piracy. It is argued that a number of social and economic factors occurring in England in the 17th and early 18th centuries created an environment in which piracy was romanticized through books, ballads, and plays, during the Golden Age itself.
