The Effects of Social Media Framing on Self-Esteem by Diana Meredith and Savannah White
Subject
The topic of the resource
Psychology
Description
An account of the resource
There have been several studies viewing the effects of social media on self-esteem (Guinta, 2018; O’Keefe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011; Vogel, Rose, Roberts, & Eckles, 2014) .
However, there has been no to very limited research on the effects of the social media frame on self-esteem. The present study hypothesized participants in the frame condition would have lower self-esteem scores than those in the no frame condition. In addition, the present study is examining the effects of sex on self-esteem. Previous research to has led to the second hypothesis that females would have a lower self-esteem score in comparison to males (Bleidorn et al., 2016; Kearney-Cooke, 1999) . Participants were required to take a pre-self-esteem assessment, watch a Google Slides presentation, and take a post-self-esteem assessment. The results partially supported the original hypotheses. Result found no significance between frame and no frame groups. On the other hand, in support of the original hypothesis, females had a significantly lower self-esteem scores than males.

The effect of well depth and septic tank distance on Escherichia coli and total coliform presence in private wells at Vilas County rental properties by Robert Rosner
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
Because Escherichia coli and other coliform bacteria pose a risk to public health through
waterborne illnesses, it is necessary to investigate the impact of well depth and septic tank proximity on bacterial contamination in rural private wells. I hypothesized that coliform contamination in wells correlates to shallow well depth and proximity to a household septic tank. To test this hypothesis, I sampled 182 wells at rental properties in Vilas County, a rural county in north central WI. My results showed that well depth and septic tank proximity had no significant influence on total coliform acteria or E. coli contamination. Additional studies with larger sample sizes are required to determine the effect of well depth, septic tank distance, and other well construction factors on coliform contamination in groundwater wells.

An account of the resource
Robert “Fightin’ Bob” La Follette Sr. spent the majority of his life as a Progressive Republican who attempted to reform the United States and remove monied interests from politics. While he was able to pass a great deal of legislation with long-lasting ramifications, his core goal was never attained; however, La Follette firmly believed that an educated populace was vital to achieving his political aims. His administration partnered with La Follette’s lifelong personal friend and president of the University of Wisconsin Charles Van Hise, as well as many other professors, in order to embark upon a massive, politically-minded, public education campaign. ‘The Wisconsin Idea,’ a guiding philosophy of the University of Wisconsin up to the modern day, was born from this collaboration. This paper explores how La Follette and the Wisconsin Idea sought to achieve their goals and examines the impact of these efforts on the lives of common Wisconsinites. In general, it is argued that the Wisconsin Idea fundamentally altered the way Wisconsinites interacted with the state university and helped create the massive UW System seen today.

The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911 and A Monster Calls, written by Patrick Ness in 2011, both feature child protagonists who deal with similar traumas, including neglect and the death of a parent. However, the way the trauma itself and the effects of the trauma are portrayed vary greatly between the novels. This paper analyzes how the different portrayals of trauma reflect society's changing understanding and acceptance of childhood and trauma.

Thomas Malthus was one of the first scholars to write about the issues of population growth. He feared that humans would surpass Earth's carrying capacity which would lead to disease, suffering, and ultimately death. He believed that higher wages were the cause of population growth, which was also how the economist Adam Smith explain this phenomenon. However, for Smith, population growth was necessary for economic growth and would ultimately result in greater prosperity in the long run. Both writers failed to recognize how the changing socioeconomic status of women would affect growth rates. Ultimately, it is the predictions of Smith that have held true so far. In fact, many contemporary writers have criticized Malthus for his failure to recognize how technology is able to expand Earth's carrying capacity. However, as concerns about global warming continue to grow, there is still a possibility that it will be Malthus who will be proven correct in the very end.

An account of the resource
In recent years, there have been studies that evaluate the potential use of predatory bacteria Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus to control the multidrug-resistant (MDR), Gram-negative pathogens associated with human infections. This study was focused on analyzing various Lipopolysaccharide and outer membrane protein mutants of forty Acinetobacter baumannii mutants in order to evaluate which factors play a role in predation. Although most of the cycle of the Bdellovibrio is known, it is still relatively unknown how these predatory bacteria attach to its prey. By co-culturing Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus 109J with a model MDR organism, Acinetobacter baumannii, we were able to identify and examine specific mutations that result in decreased predation of the predatory bacteria on the model organism. Acinetobacter baumannii with an outer membrane protein (OMP) mutation on OmpA showed a decrease in predation after 24h. Additional experiments were done on one OmpA mutated Escherichia coli and three Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains but no significant effect was found. We have established that Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus reduced the amount of MDR Acinetobacter baumannii similarly in all mutants except outer membrane protein A. This research indicates that the attachment mechanism of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus to Acinetobacter baumannii might play a vital role in predation. With the help of future studies, the proceeding steps would be to analyze the methodology further in order to solidify if outer membrane proteins play a role in attachment.

An account of the resource
Whether or not the Holy Spirit is active in spiritual gifts today, or even the degree that He is active, is essential in reviving the notion and understanding of God's presence. If the Holy Spirit is moving in spiritual gifts of contemporary culture, God is not an impersonal being. The validity of spiritual gifts can be a reminder that God is moving in our lives and that this is not just restricted to biblical times. A reawakening of awareness in the Holy Spirit is important because it will impact the way Christians act and live their lives; it can bring new spiritual flourishing in society today. There is evidence that in the past century, a renewal in focus of the Holy Spirit and the gifts it supposedly bestows has captured people's interest. In my research, I address three specific areas: how the scriptures of Christianity treat the issue concerning the validity of spiritual gifts (referencing Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4); while also looking at the historical development in thinking about the Holy Spirit; and, what the contemporary relevance of spiritual gifts is in the charismatic movement today. The specific spiritual gifts I will identify answers to concerning the validity issue include: the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues, the spiritual gift of prophesying, and the spiritual gift of healing. I will conclude with my overall takeaway from the research and what my own personal experience with spiritual gifts has been.

An account of the resource
In an initial read of Adam Smith’s landmark work Wealth of Nations for the young economics student, concepts known from our daily observations of economics are ingrained into our culture thanks to his contributions: self-interest motivates the economy, the division of labor increases production where necessary, and international trade is advantageous for all nations, to name a few. What may slip the mind of readers is the exclusion of women from Wealth of Nations, especially as the word is only given considerable time at three points throughout the series. It is a lost cause to expect economic writers of Smith’s time to be bleeding heart feminists, as thankfully the role of women in the economy has certainly evolved in passing centuries. This essay identifies Smith’s limiting narrative of women as wives, child-bearers, prostitutes, and self-sufficient individuals as their role in the wealth of nations.

Reddit, popularly known as the front-page of the internet, is an emerging platform for political campaigns. Consistently updating with fresh ideas, Reddit’s interface is dynamic with its content being exclusively user-generated. Within the website are separate communities called “subreddits,” which function similarly to online forums. IAmA (I am a) and AMA (Ask me anything) are posts on Reddit affording users the chance to ask anything of an AMA/IAmA host. Because of it’s direct contact structure, political candidates from all levels have taken to AMAs/IAmAs as a way to connect with voters; but until now scholars have not given attention to this website due to Reddit’s reputation and complex format. Our research highlights Reddit’s key role in voter representation. We examine what motivates people to engage with politicians on the website, and how their interaction affects their engagement and perception of politics. Through surveying active Reddit users we analyze the effectiveness of AMAs/IAmAs in changing the perception of a candidate, or helping them seem relatable. Our research will also introduce personal anecdotes from campaigns and Reddit users detailing their experience with this unconventional format; illuminating Reddit’s political potential.

Rhetorical Criticism
Description
An account of the resource
From taco bowls to eating pizza with a fork, food has remained a topic of conversation surrounding political campaigns. The 2016 presidential election cycle was no exception. Faced with two candidates who defied the presidential mold, both campaigns had to find unique ways to connect with voters. Food, when used correctly, can be a powerful identification tool that shapes politician’s image. Always seen eating fast-food, Trump’s food choices gave him the nickname “the blue-collar billionaire.” By comparison, the Clinton campaign used fresh and local foods to soften her image. Both decisions reflect the rhetorical significance food can play on our political system. Through my analysis, I will attempt to answer the question: "How was food used by campaigns to alter candidates’ image?” I analyze the food choices made by Clinton and Trump campaign, and examine how these decisions affected the campaigns’ overall strategy; leading to the outcome of the 2016 election.

An account of the resource
Backward time travel is something most people in modern society are familiar with through the presence of this form of time travel in popular culture. This paper explores the nature of backward time travel as a philosophical possibility, and investigates how this time travel functions within time different time theories. Through understanding which time theory best allows for the philosophical possibility of backward time travel, this paper also considers the impacts of this theory of time on the nature of free will, and consequently how free will functions within backward time travel. Through exploring the theories of presentism, the growing universe theory, the dropping branches theory, and eternalism, and investigating the solutions to multiple time travel paradoxes, this paper identifies the fatalistic nature of backward time travel as a philosophical possibility, and the consequent lack of free will present in a theory of time that allows for this philosophical possibility. Through exploration of time theory and the philosophical possibility of backward time travel, this paper concludes that eternalism is the time theory most compatible with this form of time travel and additionally that backward time travel does not allow for free will. This paper does not attempt to argue for the necessity of the philosophical possibility of backward time travel nor does it argue that eternalism must be true if society does not necessitate the philosophical possibility of backward time travel.

Description
An account of the resource
Madness is a prevalent theme in Early Modern Drama, yet the Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED) definitions of madness in use during this time suggest that these portrayals of madness may be misunderstood by modern audiences without sufficient contextual knowledge. The OED’s definitions of madness suggest that men and women in Early Modern England may have been identified as mad as a result of their abandonment of traditional gender roles. This paper investigates these forms of madness in the characters of Bel-imperia and Hieronimo in Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy (1580s), and Hamlet and Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1600s). Through comparing the portrayals of male and female madness respectively, this paper identifies similarities and gender tropes in these forms of nontraditional behavior resulting in madness: women in the early modern period appear to have been identified as mad when they play the role of truth teller, adopting the role of a man by claiming to possess important knowledge, and men are characterized as mad due to extreme displays of obsessive effeminate grief. This paper suggests that several instances of madness within Early Modern Drama need to be reclassified for contemporary audiences in order to ensure accurate modern portrayals of early modern madness as rejections of gender roles.

An account of the resource
The goal of my project was to highlight a relatively unknown poet, Charles Bukowski, and bring him in conversation with the literary canon. While Bukowski himself had no intention or desire of becoming part of literary history, his groundbreaking texts that were written with honesty and vulgarity should be considered for the canon. To determine his worthiness in the canon, it is important to study a wide range of his work and to directly examine those of his poems that most closely follow his particular style and subject matter.

One theory that has sought to understand gender identity development is Bem’s gender schema theory (Bem, 1981). The present study sought to build off of Bem’s theory and evaluate the effect of manipulating gender perceptions on evaluations of the self and others. Participants completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: control (no feedback), truthful (received their truthful male and female scores), or deceptive (received the opposite scores for their male and female characteristics). Analysis of the amount to which participants stereotyped others and adjusted their answers on the second BSRI was conducted. It was hypothesized that male participants in the deceptive condition would both stereotype others and adjust their answers significantly more than the other conditions. This hypothesis was not supported by the data collected. Limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

Description
An account of the resource
My research details the Walt Disney company and the relationship to their international parks, the process of recontextualizing American culture into the foreign countries, and the success/failures that came out of it. My primary argument is that the Walt Disney company, despite monopolizing the media culture of the world, doesn’t act hegemonically in their theme park endeavors. I argue that Disney had to adjust their usual Western-based hegemonic style of assimilating the American Disney culture according to the wants and needs of the locals. Each host country had significant agency in the development of the parks, and Disney actually had less power over the success of the parks through their glocalization efforts.
