An account of the resource
The media is often framed to purposefully influence their consumers’ perception and opinion, and in some cases empathy can be swayed by the frame and label presented. In the present study, the effects of framing and labeling on empathy were examined by testing participants levels of empathy after reading one of four short vignettes– each framed differently. Participants were given one of two frames: positive and negative; and had either identified or unidentified subject names. They were asked to rate their level of empathy towards the subject based upon the vignette they received. These results showed that subjects have higher empathy when the name of the celebrity was omitted from the vignette. Positive frames produced significantly higher empathy in comparison to the negatively framed vignettes. These findings speak to the importance of framing and labeling in regards to how individuals perceive the world, and how much control the media has on opinion and emotions.

Cell death caused by cardiac infarction events commonly result in the development of heart disease. The identification and classification of genes in these cell death pathways improves medical professionals understanding of these mechanisms and helps in the development of gene therapy techniques which can be used to impede the onset of heart disease. The goal of this research was to identify novel genes in cell death pathways. We amplified cDNA for 10 genes which were screened for high death potential. This amplified cDNA was then added into an inducible vector and inserted into an adenovirus. This adenovirus was then introduced to cells with the doxycycline (DOX) inducer and examined for cell death. We expected to see cells that had virus applied without DOX to be healthy and living, and cells with virus and DOX to have significant cell death from the induced gene. Instead, we observed substantial cell death in both cases of virus applied to cells and healthy, living control cells. We concluded that the induced gene could not be responsible for this death and rather viral toxicity caused the increased death. Further testing these viruses, with consideration of recent literature, could demonstrate if these genes are active in a cell death pathway.

The Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP), has evolved substantially since the party's formation in 1854. Its ideological structure has been adjusted several times over the course of history which can be broken down into four eras: the Liberal Era, the Transition Era, the Conservative Era, and the Modern Era. This research will include a brief historical overview of each era, a discussion on how the ideological fabric of the GOP changed from one era to the next, a special focus on four key Republican presidents (Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Donald Trump), and an examination of the three key American values that define the party: adherence to morality, individualism, and nationalism. These values have remained consistent in the party over the course of its existence and continue to connect the Republican Party of yesterday to the Republican Party of today.

Bro Country: Creating a New Image of Country Music
Subject

Description
An account of the resource
Over the years country music has changed a lot through the development of new sounds, shifting ideas, and new audiences, leading to many new subgenres within the larger musical genre. "Bro-country" is one of these alleged new subgenres, and it has seen a lot of commercial and crossover success in recent years. In this paper, I introduce how a genre is traditionally defined and then present why "bro-country" is indeed considered its own subgroup of the country music genre. I then discuss how a new image of country music is created through this subgenre and how it differs from the image that is often perceived by fans and outside parties. Through analyzing this image, it is possible to see how it has influenced perceptions of country music in the context of recent events, particularly that of the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on October 1st 2017. Overall, I argue that bro-country is a subgenre of country music, and that the image criticized in the wake of the shootings is based on an image that is represented by only a small minority, most of whom are not considered "bro-country" within the large genre of country music, and many artists have actually attempted to distance themselves from this image.

Proteins are the most abundant biological macromolecules and, based on their
three-dimensional shape, perform life-sustaining functions. The process by which a
protein assumes its folded shape remains an open question and has intrigued biologist and chemists for decades. Mathematicians have joined forces with the natural scientists and brought with them the tools of differential geometry, which prove powerful for modeling proteins. We explore the method of [3] to model a small subset of proteins using polyhelical space curves. We successfully modeled three alpha-helical repeat proteins. The developed model has demonstrated possible uses in predicting theoretical tertiary structures of proteins given a set of secondary structures--a step in the right direction of solving the protein folding problem. Additionally, we provide insight into the relationship between clashes and the model's stability calculator, which may improve the viability of their model.

An account of the resource
Since the economic reform "Đổi Mới" in 1986, Vietnam's economy has made remarkable progress, which has increased Vietnam’s standard of living significantly. However, the additional wealth has not been shared equally between ethnic groups. The ethnic Vietnamese majority, known as the Kinh, have a poverty rate of only 9 percent, while other ethnic groups have a 51 percent poverty rate in 2010. Among the most impoverished are the Degar, also known as Montagnards or Highlanders, the ethnic minorities that inhabit the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Several Vietnamese social scientists and policy-makers share a common belief that the persistent poverty of the Degar can be explained by alleged shortcomings in the cultures of ethnic minorities. However, by examining the consequences of significant events in the past that still haunts the development of the Degar till today, I will argue that the poverty experienced by the Degar is being conditioned by social and political factors. The second part of the paper explores the potential of microfinance as a tool for poverty alleviation. Despite its potential, the microfinance industry in Vietnam is faced with several constraints that limit its impact such as low interest rate set by state-owned banks and the legal framework surrounding the operation of Microfinance Institutions.

Circle Sanctuary, as an Ideological State Apparatus (ISA), interpellates Neopagan practitioners into ideologies such as interconnectedness through rituals following the structure of rites of passage. In the liminal stage of rituals, Altered States of Consciousness may be induced due to the physiological and psychological triggers in rituals, which produces psychological effects like hyper-suggestibility in practitioners. From this state of hyper-suggestibility, Circle Sanctuary reverends are able to easily interpellate practitioners into Neopagan ideologies through repetitive chants and other suggestions. In addition, Neopaganism is a felicitous system for this specific historical and cultural moment in America, due to its universalist, activist, and oppositional nature, which appeals to many people as modern Americans face the social and environmental crises of their time.

Description
An account of the resource
For a long time, Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS), a common injury seen in athletes of all different backgrounds, was believed to be due to friction between the iliotibial band (ITB) and the lateral femoral epicondyle of the femur. However, Fairclough et al. 2006 recently proposed a new compression model that looks at the compression of a highly innervated fatty tissue layer beneath the ITB, instead of the pain stemming from the ITB itself. This new model has led researchers to rethink previous beliefs and conduct more research to better understand the syndrome. Under further examination, MRI’s back up Fairclough et al. by revealing the presence of inflammation beneath the ITB in a layer of highly innervated fatty tissue that becomes tightly compressed during 30° flexion, an angle that can be reached by an activity as simple as climbing a flight of stairs. Further research has been performed to reevaluate two precursors that have been found to be associated with ITBS in the past, increased peak hip adduction and increased peak internal knee rotation, to determine whether it would be possible for them to lead to the new compression syndrome. Due to the ability of both of these precursors to pull the ITB tighter than it normally would be, it was concluded that they could increase the pressure the ITB places on the highly innervated fatty tissue layer, resulting in the compression syndrome.

Description
An account of the resource
Billl Cosby's allegations caused one of the most catastrophic identity crises in American history. Between October 16, 2014 and December 30, 2015, over fifty women accused award winning entertainer of sexually assaulting them. Bill Cosby and his public relations personnel used his wholesome, kind hearted television personality to their advantage when responding to the press. They used a series of apologia strategies to focus on image restoration. This research analyzes the apologia genre from three main perspectives: Cosby, his public relations personnel, and his surrogates. The defense of Bill Cosby was achieved by the attempt to attack his accusers, the use of the strategy of avoidance and confusion, and the bolstering of both his philanthropic and fictional images.

Václav Havel is one the main European dissidents and political leaders that helped bring the change from the old style communist regimes to capitalist democracies. Havel’s experience of living and playwriting under the Czechoslovakia’s communist regime and eventually becoming their democratically elected president greatly influenced his ideology of stressing the importance of human conscience. The political philosophy of human conscience falls into two main camps freedom of expression, which includes free thought, identity, and natural rights. The other factor is the idea of responsibility which evolves from non-political means to political means, and eventually global responsibility. Havel’s human conscience is rooted in a tradition of Czech humanism and Havel’s life experiences.

An account of the resource
This paper explores the views of Abigail Adams, wife of second President of the United States John Adams. Adams has been called an early feminist thinker because of her outspoken comments in written communication about how women ought to be treated. This paper explores the extent and depth of these comments by reviewing her extensive written communication legacy throughout different periods of her life. Examination of Abigail's early life, early marriage to John, life during the Revolution, life during John's Presidency, and late life reveal that she was not the cut and dry feminist that people believed her to be, but rather, acted in many ways like a woman of her time. This is not to say that Abigail did not have her bold, rebellious moments, as this paper highlights.

Description
An account of the resource
A semidiscrete curve-shortening flow continuously deforms a polygon in the direction of an inward normal until it shrinks to a point. We are interested in the long-time behavior of polygons under such flows. Is there a semidiscrete flow under which all polygons become asymptotically regular? This is an open question, but we provide numerical evidence to suggest that the recent β-polygon flow of Glickenstein and Liang produces regular polygons. It is known that triangles become regular under the β-polygon flow. Using a rescaled flow in which a regular polygon is a fixed point, we note how side lengths and angles evolve under the β-polygon flow and conjecture that all quadrilaterals become rhombic and polygons with more than 5 vertices become regular.

The effects of task difficulty and task type on physiological arousal levels and task performance were examined by testing participants’ physiological arousal levels on a physiograph machine and scoring how well they performed on given tasks. Participants were given simple, medium, and complex tasks in either a quantitative or verbal condition, for which questions were chosen from the GRE. Three 3x2 mixed design analyses of variance were conducted to test significance between task difficulty and physiological arousal levels, task difficulty and type of task on performance scores, and type of task and physiological arousal levels. Significance was found in the main effects of task difficulty on physiological arousal levels, task difficulty on performance scores, type of task on performance scores, and the interaction of type of task and task difficulty on performance scores. There was no significant correlation found between physiological arousal levels and performance scores.

Ghost Folklore at Ripon College by Rebekha Crockett
Description
An account of the resource
Ghost folklore has existed in most cultures throughout history. While many would consider the days of ghouls and superstitions to be long gone, it seems that ghost stories are thriving. In fact, ghost stories are of great importance to contemporary culture. This case study of a small, purportedly haunted, Midwestern college, provides insight into the phenomenon of American college campus folklore. Using various anthropological theories, this study explores the prevalence of belief in ghosts, various ghost stories and, more importantly, what these stories reflect about campus culture.
