Bro Country: Creating a New Image of Country Music
Subject
The topic of the resource

Description
An account of the resource
Over the years country music has changed a lot through the development of new sounds, shifting ideas, and new audiences, leading to many new subgenres within the larger musical genre. "Bro-country" is one of these alleged new subgenres, and it has seen a lot of commercial and crossover success in recent years. In this paper, I introduce how a genre is traditionally defined and then present why "bro-country" is indeed considered its own subgroup of the country music genre. I then discuss how a new image of country music is created through this subgenre and how it differs from the image that is often perceived by fans and outside parties. Through analyzing this image, it is possible to see how it has influenced perceptions of country music in the context of recent events, particularly that of the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on October 1st 2017. Overall, I argue that bro-country is a subgenre of country music, and that the image criticized in the wake of the shootings is based on an image that is represented by only a small minority, most of whom are not considered "bro-country" within the large genre of country music, and many artists have actually attempted to distance themselves from this image.

An account of the resource
This study examined 80 short stories written by Caucasian male and female short story authors in the later part of the 19th century. Results indicate that while males and females did not have specifically different styles, the topics on which they wrote differed. These results were compared to the works of feminist authors as well as modern day research on gender differences in writing style. Reasons for and implications of results are discussed.

Comparison of Usury/Interest and Asymmetric Information by Jacob Diny
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
The paper compares Adam Smith’s philosophy of Usury to the modern theory of usury and critiques the theory Adam Smith presents. After the comparison, there is discussion about how Adam Smith wanted to regulate usury or interest rates. I then present how asymmetric information played a role the 2008 financial crisis and give a brief overview on some of the causes of the “Great Recession” based on published literature. I then take Adam Smith’s theory on usury and describe how Adam Smith would have reacted to the 2008 crisis and the causes leading up to it. Adam Smith would have argued against the deregulation because Smith believed in only lending to the “sober people”, people who have proven themselves in business already.

Conversing with the Dynamic Nominalist: Hacking into the Social Sciences by Emelia Erickson

Description
An account of the resource
Ian Hacking posits that the looping effect is occurring within the social sciences and it is causing scientists to change their object of study as they study it. As social scientists classify humans based on behavior, they create a new reality for humans to act under which causes the behavior that defines the classification to change. Thus, changes in the classification loop back on humans in the classification. Hacking’s argument for the looping effect takes place in several stages throughout his career. This paper looks at the history of the argument for the looping effect and then lays out an argument for the implications of the looping effect that Hacking has not given. Then an argument is given toward the limitations of the looping effect.

Both Hume and Smith are influential philosophers and economists, and wrote some of the most important historical works in the beginnings of the study of economics. Both men wrote a variety of essays and publications on the subject, and were both published and respected men in their days. Hume and Smith have different writings with different focuses: Hume primarily focused on philosophy, while much of Smith’s writings centered on economics based on philosophy. While they may not have always agreed, there is a definite link between the two writers, and they are more similar than not in their writings.

An account of the resource
Ultrafast electron microscopy is an emerging field of interest that utilizes pulses of electrons as a tool to probe specimens, particularly to enable the study of ultrafast dynamics. We will use optical techniques to try and compress electron pulses to generate an improved temporal resolution. This will enable faster dynamics to be at the center of attention for future research. The work presented in this undergraduate thesis is a contribution to this optical technique and involves the design and operation of a pulsed electron source.

Description
An account of the resource
Oxygen radicals and the reactive by-products they create have long been indicated in the disease pathways of metabolic disorders, given that they have the potential to react with the key components of proteins and thus disrupt their functioning. One of the most common by-products of oxygen radicals reacting with components of the cell is 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4HNE). Numerous studies have indicated that 4HNE is able to adduct to single amino acids, peptide sequences, as well as whole proteins. Electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) is a highly active electron transferase of the fatty acid and amino acid oxidation pathways, and deficiency of this protein has been indicated in numerous disease pathways. ETF has demonstrated reduced activity when incubated with 4HNE, therefore this study attempted to determine possible binding sites of 4HNE on ETF by utilizing model peptides and LC-MS analysis. Distinct 4HNE adducts were formed with the peptide angiotensin II as well as a peptide from the alpha subunit of ETF. The groundwork has been laid for further research into the possibility of cross-linking occurring between ETF subunits as well as analysis of 4HNE adducts on ETF through tryptic digest.

Direct interactions between Escherichia coli transcription proteins Rho and NusA by Taryn Bosquez
Subject
The topic of the resource
Biology
Description
An account of the resource
Transcription termination is an important regulatory component within the Escherichia coli (E. coli) genome. Two proteins are known to influence transcriptional termination in E. coli: Rho and NusA. Rho only functions to induce transcription termination, while NusA is involved in both the enhancement and inhibition of termination. This study aimed to determine whether the two proteins influence each other's functions through direct or indirect interactions. Reciprocal yeast two hybrid (Y2H) analysis using vectors expressing Rho and NusA as fusion with the protein domain of the Gal4 transcriptional factor indicated direct interactions between the two proteins. These results will allow us to further study the mechanistic roles of each protein in transcription termination, as well as the process of gene expression throughout the E.coli genome.

Description
An account of the resource
F. Scott Fitzgerald's final unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon: A Western is a text that has historically received minimal scholarly attention due ot its incomplete state. Most often put in dialogue with other Fitzgerald works, such as The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender Is the Night (1934), Tycoon has been the subject of few independent studies, unless the focus has been on the text's "tragic" unfinished status. This label of "incomplete" led the work's editors, Edmund Wilson in 1941 and Matthew J. Bruccoli in 1993, to attempt to "finish" the novel by including introductions, facsimiles of Fitzgerald's notes, and, in Wilson's case, a synopsis of Fitzgerald's outline for the remainder of the work, in their respective editions. However, this paper argues that such attempts to "repair" Tycoon have only disabled the novel by adding extratextual prostheses that make the individual editions of Tycoon more about the editor than the author or the text. By applying David Mitchell and Sharon Snyder's textual theory of narrative prosthesis at the extratextual level, the problematic editorial prostheses reveal themselves and point to the need for a new way to read unfinished texts. This new method involves removing previously normalized prostheses, such as introductions, notes, and the tagline of "unfinished," from the published versions of incomplete texts in order to encourage readers to come to their own conclusions about these works and foster a broader conversation about unfinished literature that centers on editorial and textual theory rather than tragedy.

Description
An account of the resource
The present study sought to expand on previous research which had indicated that engaging in political discourse through social media increases the level of comfortability people have when discussing those topics in person. This study used screenshotted pictures of fake Facebook posts between either authority figures (politicians) or civilians. The posts were also either between two people or a group discussion amongst five people. Results showed that there was no significant effect reported by including either an authority figure or a civilian or the group size involved in the conversation. However, the analysis did report near significance in the condition which examined question three in relation to group size. The neutral condition also reported no significance.

Energy density of two forage species in the northwestern Atlantic: Silver Hake (Merluccius bilinearis) and Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) by Katherine King
Subject
The topic of the resource
Biology
Description
An account of the resource
Understanding forage species’ energy density is important for mapping energy flow in an ecosystem. Bioenergetic models are used to determine which species play important roles and how changes may influence the ecosystem in which they reside. In the Northwest Atlantic ecosystem, energy flow is largely controlled by forage species. The current study aims to 1) compare two forage species’ energy content and 2) find a size measurement which can be used to predict energy content. Using a Soxhlet apparatus and muffle furnace, the lipid and protein values of two forage species, Alewife and Silver Hake, were collected. Alewife are 3-4 times as lipid rich as Silver Hake, depending on the size measurement. Dry weight measurements can be used to predict energy in Alewife, however, Silver Hake did not have a size measurement which could be used to confidently predict energy content. Why species vary in which measurements can be used to predict energy and how to effectively use the energy data that can be collected is a direction for future research.

The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911 and A Monster Calls, written by Patrick Ness in 2011, both feature child protagonists who deal with similar traumas, including neglect and the death of a parent. However, the way the trauma itself and the effects of the trauma are portrayed vary greatly between the novels. This paper analyzes how the different portrayals of trauma reflect society's changing understanding and acceptance of childhood and trauma.

Evolutionary Origins of Mental Disorders: Overlooked Advantageous Survival Mechanisms by Samuel Cares
Subject
The topic of the resource
Psychology
Description
An account of the resource
The stigma that accompanies mental disorders in the modern age contributes to the widely held belief that they are completely negative. However, based on Darwin's (1860) theory of evolution, it seems as though such a large flaw would have been made extinct by now. However, careful and meticulous research shows that the origins of many disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are in the far northern hemisphere. Here, it would have been advantageous to have the characteristics of a person with the modern concept of OCD. Conscientiousness, parsimonious, and future-oriented thought would have aided, not hindered, the survival of our ancestors. Other disorders, including mania and depression, share similar characteristics that could be considered evolutionarily advantageous. This is a stance that is rarely taken by individuals, including mental health professionals. However, such an approach offers a silver lining for society as a whole to consider, and this reconsideration of mental disorders thus must conclude that these disorders are more than just maladaptive behaviors.
