Taxing the Wealth of Nations by Ethan Freiermuth
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
According to Adam Smith, whose insights still underpin economics as a discipline to this day, taxation is justified by the government’s ability to fulfill needs which cannot be supplied by the market and otherwise intervening to create efficiency and efficacy. While Smith’s recommendations and policy analyses were limited by his economic model and by the economic and technological development of his time, his principles are still very much applicable to the modern day. It is abundantly clear that Smith argues the vast majority of the market should be left alone to the natural incentives of the private sphere, however he does still envision a role for government which creates and enhances economic inefficiency, and provides still relevant guidelines for avoiding ill-advised policies which imprudently tax the wealth of nations.

Comparison of Usury/Interest and Asymmetric Information by Jacob Diny
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
The paper compares Adam Smith’s philosophy of Usury to the modern theory of usury and critiques the theory Adam Smith presents. After the comparison, there is discussion about how Adam Smith wanted to regulate usury or interest rates. I then present how asymmetric information played a role the 2008 financial crisis and give a brief overview on some of the causes of the “Great Recession” based on published literature. I then take Adam Smith’s theory on usury and describe how Adam Smith would have reacted to the 2008 crisis and the causes leading up to it. Adam Smith would have argued against the deregulation because Smith believed in only lending to the “sober people”, people who have proven themselves in business already.

Inequalities in Food Access in Milwaukee County, WI by Rebecca Rate and Dr. Soren Hauge
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
Debate continues over “food deserts”, or disparities in food access, which disproportionately affect low-income and minority communities. This study adds to the quantitative empirical analysis of these disparities, informed by economic theory. Data for neighborhoods of Milwaukee County in 2016 are used to test whether, controlling for other economic factors, there remains a statistically and economically significant difference in access to various types of food retailers among neighborhoods of different racial compositions. The process is modelled on an empirical analysis done in Erie County, New York in 2008, with some modifications. Travel times from retailers to neighborhoods (census block groups) measured in a geographic information system provide counts of retailers accessible to each neighborhood. These are used for estimation of inter-neighborhood inequalities with Gini coefficients and incidence rate ratios with Poisson, negative binomial, zero-inflated Poisson and semi-parametric Poisson regressions. The findings show that there are far fewer large supermarkets accessible to neighborhoods that are predominantly black, compared to those that are predominantly white. By contrast, there are a greater number of smaller grocery stores, by all travel modes -- driving, walking and bicycling. Results are mixed for convenience and variety stores, but the statistically significant results show more convenience and variety stores in neighborhoods that are predominantly black. If further research confirms higher costs and lesser variety of healthy foods at smaller grocery stores, convenience and variety stores, these results will have troubling implications for public health in the context of a metropolitan area with high levels of racial segregation.

An account of the resource
Thomas Malthus was one of the first scholars to write about the issues of population growth. He feared that humans would surpass Earth's carrying capacity which would lead to disease, suffering, and ultimately death. He believed that higher wages were the cause of population growth, which was also how the economist Adam Smith explain this phenomenon. However, for Smith, population growth was necessary for economic growth and would ultimately result in greater prosperity in the long run. Both writers failed to recognize how the changing socioeconomic status of women would affect growth rates. Ultimately, it is the predictions of Smith that have held true so far. In fact, many contemporary writers have criticized Malthus for his failure to recognize how technology is able to expand Earth's carrying capacity. However, as concerns about global warming continue to grow, there is still a possibility that it will be Malthus who will be proven correct in the very end.

An account of the resource
In an initial read of Adam Smith’s landmark work Wealth of Nations for the young economics student, concepts known from our daily observations of economics are ingrained into our culture thanks to his contributions: self-interest motivates the economy, the division of labor increases production where necessary, and international trade is advantageous for all nations, to name a few. What may slip the mind of readers is the exclusion of women from Wealth of Nations, especially as the word is only given considerable time at three points throughout the series. It is a lost cause to expect economic writers of Smith’s time to be bleeding heart feminists, as thankfully the role of women in the economy has certainly evolved in passing centuries. This essay identifies Smith’s limiting narrative of women as wives, child-bearers, prostitutes, and self-sufficient individuals as their role in the wealth of nations.

An account of the resource
Since the economic reform "Đổi Mới" in 1986, Vietnam's economy has made remarkable progress, which has increased Vietnam’s standard of living significantly. However, the additional wealth has not been shared equally between ethnic groups. The ethnic Vietnamese majority, known as the Kinh, have a poverty rate of only 9 percent, while other ethnic groups have a 51 percent poverty rate in 2010. Among the most impoverished are the Degar, also known as Montagnards or Highlanders, the ethnic minorities that inhabit the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Several Vietnamese social scientists and policy-makers share a common belief that the persistent poverty of the Degar can be explained by alleged shortcomings in the cultures of ethnic minorities. However, by examining the consequences of significant events in the past that still haunts the development of the Degar till today, I will argue that the poverty experienced by the Degar is being conditioned by social and political factors. The second part of the paper explores the potential of microfinance as a tool for poverty alleviation. Despite its potential, the microfinance industry in Vietnam is faced with several constraints that limit its impact such as low interest rate set by state-owned banks and the legal framework surrounding the operation of Microfinance Institutions.

Both Hume and Smith are influential philosophers and economists, and wrote some of the most important historical works in the beginnings of the study of economics. Both men wrote a variety of essays and publications on the subject, and were both published and respected men in their days. Hume and Smith have different writings with different focuses: Hume primarily focused on philosophy, while much of Smith’s writings centered on economics based on philosophy. While they may not have always agreed, there is a definite link between the two writers, and they are more similar than not in their writings.

Description
An account of the resource
In this paper, I discuss how product differentiation models from game theory can be applied to the political arena. The paper briefly reviews partisan politics in the United States and then discusses product differentiation and the “linear city” product differentiation model. I then create a game to model the current Congress. The solved version of the game yields a prediction for the actions of the Republican-controlled Congress and President Obama.

OPEC and the Crude Oil Market with Game Theory Applications by Alexandra Haen
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has been a major player in the world market for crude oil ever since the organization’s formation in 1960. While there are oil-exporting countries that are not members of this organization, their production decisions and opportunities for profit have in the past been greatly affected by the decisions of OPEC. In the context of game theory, literature has struggled to determine the “rules of the game” regarding OPEC’s recent performance and the strategies its member countries are “playing”. This paper summarizes recent research and game theory analysis of the crude oil industry, discusses the Prisoner’s Dilemma game and applies it to the production and strategy options for each player, and calculates relative payoffs and total market output in a setting where Saudi Arabia acts as a Stackelberg leader. Additionally, the development of trigger strategies will be applied to OPEC’s current situation in an attempt to describe the subgame perfect equilibrium in which the member countries can sustain collusion.

Adam Smith’s Ideas Applied to Today’s Economy by Alexandra Haen
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
This paper focuses on Adam Smith’s “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations”, which was published in 1776 and continues to be a highly regarded contribution to economic theory. Through comparing Smith’s ideas on topics such as production, foreign trade, taxation, and different areas of government spending with current United States policies, one can begin to see how the state of America’s economy lines up with Smith’s ideal system and which changes Smith might suggest.

Roots of Economic Dichotomy: A Comparative Analysis of Adam Smith and Karl Marx by Eric Seiler
Subject
The topic of the resource
Economics
Description
An account of the resource
One of the most commonly referenced dichotomies in the field of economics is that which pits capitalism against communism. The economists behind these ideologies, Adam Smith and Karl Marx, respectively, are generally seen as foils of each other, not having anything in common while having strictly opposing ideals. This paper aims to analyze the works of Smith and Marx in order to see just how strong of a dichotomy exists between the two while exploring the idea that there may have been some agreement between the two.
