Description
An account of the resource
The goal of my project was to highlight a relatively unknown poet, Charles Bukowski, and bring him in conversation with the literary canon. While Bukowski himself had no intention or desire of becoming part of literary history, his groundbreaking texts that were written with honesty and vulgarity should be considered for the canon. To determine his worthiness in the canon, it is important to study a wide range of his work and to directly examine those of his poems that most closely follow his particular style and subject matter.

Black Heroes Matter by Juan Baez

Description
An account of the resource
The world of comics has many black superheroes who mostly added as a sidekick for the main hero such as Falcon to Captain America, Storm to Cyclops from X-Men, and even Miles Morales to Spider-Man. While Falcon became the first mainstream black superhero when introduced in 1969 as Captain America’s second hand man. Storm was introduced in 1975 and became one of the first black members of the X-Men only to be a sidekick to the group as the main trio of the team was highlighted in the comics. Then comes Miles Morales in 2006 as the first black character to take the Spider-man mantle after the death of Peter Parker (Ultimate universe). Miles has a history of being put in the sidekick position during crossover events where he goes into a different dimension to help Peter with a end of the world crisis.
Films have given the spotlight to black superheroes who can hold their own in the box office as their Anglo counterparts and have helped bring more popularity. We have seen “Black Panther” break records for the month of February in 2018 as an all black cast brought the world of Wakanda and the struggles T’Challa faced as he took the role of King of Wakanda. Fast forward a few months later to December of 2018 and we get the animated feature of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” where we see Miles Morales become the Spider-Man of his universe. The films each deal with a specific struggle that affects African American society while telling the story of African American superheroes.

An account of the resource
This study examined 80 short stories written by Caucasian male and female short story authors in the later part of the 19th century. Results indicate that while males and females did not have specifically different styles, the topics on which they wrote differed. These results were compared to the works of feminist authors as well as modern day research on gender differences in writing style. Reasons for and implications of results are discussed.

An account of the resource
The declining readership of poetry has caused concern amongst scholars, leading them to ask questions: is poetry too difficult or too elitist? These concerns arise because of poetry's dependence of scholars by generating a new audience that appreciates lively performances of the poet's marginalized identity. No one has been more successful on the slam stage than four time National Poetry Slam champion Patricia Smith, as her performances harken back to poetry's roots in orality. This paper examines how Smith's slam poetry imitates the intimate relationship between the storyteller and the listener from oral cultures, drawing parallels to authorship and identity, performance and composition, and modern and oral audiences.

An account of the resource
The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911 and A Monster Calls, written by Patrick Ness in 2011, both feature child protagonists who deal with similar traumas, including neglect and the death of a parent. However, the way the trauma itself and the effects of the trauma are portrayed vary greatly between the novels. This paper analyzes how the different portrayals of trauma reflect society's changing understanding and acceptance of childhood and trauma.

Description
An account of the resource
I chose to present five poems that I have written during this past year -- the most challenging, and most rewarding, year of my college career. The first two poems I wrote at the beginning of the semester in the Intro to Poetry class, while the last two poems are pieces I wrote for publication in Parallax. I have chosen these four poems for two reasons: to illustrate the progression of my poetry- writing skill over the course of the year, and to speak to the therapeutic aspect of writing poems, as writing these have helped me process events, emotions, and desires in a positive, creative way. I plan to continue writing poetry as a way to express myself and my deepest thoughts -- thank you to the English Department for bringing poetry back into my life.

ENG 310 - Advanced Poetry
Description
An account of the resource
The poem upon which this video is based, titled 10 Ways to Get Lost in Your Own Neighborhood, was written by Maddy Vega during Professor Gannon's ENG 310: Advanced Poetry course. It was then selected for use in a video project, for which students were tasked to create a short creative video based on their poem.
As the poem explores themes of an adolescence navigating typical adolescent struggles along with those additionally imposed by mental illness, the video similarly combines elements of the mundane and elements of the strange, from the distorted voiceover to the innocent knickknacks decorating the walls of the room.
The video was shot during the spring of 2016 and directed by the author of the poem, Maddy Vega, who also stars in it.

Description
An account of the resource
F. Scott Fitzgerald's final unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon: A Western is a text that has historically received minimal scholarly attention due ot its incomplete state. Most often put in dialogue with other Fitzgerald works, such as The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender Is the Night (1934), Tycoon has been the subject of few independent studies, unless the focus has been on the text's "tragic" unfinished status. This label of "incomplete" led the work's editors, Edmund Wilson in 1941 and Matthew J. Bruccoli in 1993, to attempt to "finish" the novel by including introductions, facsimiles of Fitzgerald's notes, and, in Wilson's case, a synopsis of Fitzgerald's outline for the remainder of the work, in their respective editions. However, this paper argues that such attempts to "repair" Tycoon have only disabled the novel by adding extratextual prostheses that make the individual editions of Tycoon more about the editor than the author or the text. By applying David Mitchell and Sharon Snyder's textual theory of narrative prosthesis at the extratextual level, the problematic editorial prostheses reveal themselves and point to the need for a new way to read unfinished texts. This new method involves removing previously normalized prostheses, such as introductions, notes, and the tagline of "unfinished," from the published versions of incomplete texts in order to encourage readers to come to their own conclusions about these works and foster a broader conversation about unfinished literature that centers on editorial and textual theory rather than tragedy.
